I’ve been telecommuting more frequently now which 1) is amazing and 2) means I have to organize my home office. I’m very fortunate in that I have a separate room with doors and a handmade office desk that my hubby built when we first moved in (before kids when we actually had time to do those types of home improvement projects!).
His desks are awesome, but they have no drawers or built in storage, other than a small bookshelf on the shared desk part and our IKEA cabinets above our desks. I hope to have a “before” and “after” photo soon of our office though as it has gotten way out of hand with how messy and cluttered it is. It could be the lack of built in storage, or maybe we just have too much crap. Even in this environmentally conscious household, so much for being a paperless society! The paper is a constant struggle for us…another post for another time…
With working from home more frequently lately, I realized I didn’t have some of the “amenities” I was used to in a usual office, like drawers, file sorters, file folders, etc. But since I despise buying anything new until I have tried to find a way to “make do with what I have”, I had to find a way to create my own organization.
The one place I was successful was in file organization. I came across some scrap fabric and not sure why or how but the light bulb went out as I sat on the floor staring at this pile of fabric wondering “what the heck can I do with this ugly print and dark green pool table top fabric?” Somehow the idea of using it to solve my file sorter issue came into mind. So I sat in my hallway (brightest spot of the day with the sunlight coming in) and pinned, measured with the file folders in hand, pinned some more, folded over, pinned some more, and then finally sat at my sewing machine and sewed it all up. Here is what I came up with:
